ELMORE COUNTY - In a bizarre turn of events, two already incarcerated men, Jason Aaron Muphy - 22 years old, and his brother 17-year-old Jared Brandon Murphy, have been charged with capital murder in the shooting death of Ronnie Holman on Tuesday, July 29.

"The investigation is ongoing. We haven't completed our investigation. The sheriff's office has been working on this case night and day since it happened. I've been in constant contact with the sheriff so I know they've been working on it. There are still things that need to be done. We believe that are still people out there with information that need to come forward at this time," said District Attorney Randall Houston.

Holman was murdered in his front yard at 1245 Providence Road in Titus around 9 p.m. after investigating why his dogs were barking.

The two brothers, listed at 8420 Bradley Road in Central, are being held in the Elmore County Jail without bond.

Though Jared Murphy is a juvenile, he will be tried as an adult in the case.

"Capital murder is an automatic certification offense. So he will be treated as an adult for that," said Houston.

The case will most likely be presented to the next available Grand Jury. The DA's office could seek the death penalty in this case.

"It's never easy to get a death penalty out of any jury. That depends on the jury. It depends on the facts. It's never easy to obtain. My staff asked me not to comment on the death penalty aspects at this time. But of course that is an option in any capital case.

"I say the next Grand Jury, assuming we get all our stuff back from forensics, and the investigation is completed. We're not going to rush to indict them. They need to be incarcerated. They need to be in jail. It will be presented to the Grand Jury when it's ready. That will depend on forensics and Sheriff Franklin," said Houston.

Ironically, the two men had previously been arrested following a police chase across two counties on Wednesday, July 30 - the day after Holman's murder.

The chase started around 10 p.m. when a white van was spotted by the Wetumpka Police on Hwy. 231 near Pri Med that fit the description of a vehicle used in a purse snatching earlier that evening in Montgomery.

The chase ended just north of the Kowaliga Bridge when sheriff's deputies shot out the van's tires.

"They tried driving on the axle after the tires were shot gone. They ran several people off the road and caused around $35,000 worth of damage. I asked Jason Murphy what he thought he was doing, and he said 'Man it's you're job to catch me'." said Franklin.

Jason Murphy had just been released from the Elmore County Jail the previous Friday, July 25, after being arrested on June 30 for possession of drug paraphernalia and a slough of motor vehicle charges.

Also in the van, was a woman and her infant child. The woman was arrested on some outstanding charges but has since been released.

The child was taken to Elmore Community Hospital for observation and then released to child resources.
