Charity poker event illegal, canceled
A charity poker benefit scheduled for Saturday has been canceled after a meeting Wednesday between District Attorney Randall Houston, event organizer Tom Isbell and Kenneth Steely from the state Attorney General's Office.
The Texas-style game was to be played at the National Guard Armory in Wetumpka and proceeds were to go to the American Red Cross. Houston notified Isbell Tuesday afternoon that the county did not have a law in place to allow charitable gambling.
Houston said that Elmore County, like Autauga and Chilton counties, does not have charitable bingo or charitable gambling.
The event's Web site, www.pokerclubonline.org, had not been updated as of Wednesday afternoon.
