Former Cop Sentenced To Jail Scotty Williams swore to protect and serve the public. Now the former Clanton police officer will serve time in jail. Judge Sibley Reynolds sentenced Williams this morning to 15 years in prison. A jury convicted Williams last month on attempted sodomy and kidnapping of a teenager. Just before sentencing, Williams choked up a little and said he hoped the 'truth will come out one day.' District Attorney Randall Houston says what makes this case so unusual is the fact this was a well-respected police officer. "It was so shocking when this came out because Scotty was respected in the community and was always there if you needed back up. ABI investigated it thoroughly and we're satisfied with the evidence," says Houston. Williams' attorney and family members declined to offer any comments after the sentencing. Williams does have the option of appealing his punishment. He'll be eligible for parole in about 5 years. In the same courtroom, another former Clanton police officer may be in trouble. DeWayne Wright entered a 'not guilty' plea to a charge of using excessive force. Wright is accused of using unnecessary force against Thomas Johnson during Memorial Day last year. Wright responded to a disturbance call at a bar in Clanton where officer Wright allegedly used excessive force in detaining Johnson. No word when Wright's case will go to trial. |
