WETUMPKA, Ala. (AP) -- An Elmore County man pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 40 years in prison on Wednesday for shooting his mother in the head as she cooked him breakfast.

Kevin Mitchell Williams, 26, shot his mother, Ruby Taylor, at her Lake Martin home in August 2000 to get money for drugs, prosecutors said.

Two days after the shooting, Williams was arrested in Chilton County after he tried to use his mother's ATM card, police reports said.

Williams faced capital murder charges in the case, but pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of murder.

Williams said he hopes his story will discourage others from using drugs.

"I've never been in trouble with the law before this," he told The Montgomery Advertiser in a Thursday story. "I had a couple of speeding tickets, but I paid them. I had a good job in Montgomery, I had a family. I lost all that to drugs."

The district attorney's office offered the plea agreement after Williams' sister, Lisa Epperson, gave her blessing, Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Jordan said.
