An Elmore County man pleaded guilty to sexual abuse
charges Tuesday in a case where he abused a victim under age 12, the day
after he finished probation for a previous sex crime conviction.
Donald Ray Jones, 36, 4485 Holtville Road, Wetumpka, entered the plea for
two counts of sexual abuse, court records show. Jones will remain in the
Elmore County Jail pending his sentencing July 21, said District Attorney
Randall Houston. Circuit Judge Sibley Reynolds took the plea and will hand
down the sentence.
"The plea agreement was two 20-year sentences served consecutively,"
Houston said. "We want him to serve the first 20 years before he begins
serving the term on the second charge. We need to make sure Donald Ray
Jones is put in prison for a very long time, so he won't be a threat to
children anymore. He has forfeited his right to live among the decent
people of this community."
Jones' attorney, Kenny James, could not be reached for comment. Records
show Jones was arrested on Feb. 3 in connection with an abuse allegation
reported to authorities on Jan. 22. The abuse occurred one day after his
probation ended on a previous sex crime conviction, Houston said. Court
records show Jones had been convicted of sodomy and sexual abuse before
his February arrest.
