Woman misses bond hearing
A Prattville woman, awaiting sentencing for a hit and run which left an Independence man in a vegetative state, failed to show up for a bond revocation hearing Wednesday, prompting the judge to issue an arrest warrant. Ashley Rogers, 34, 104 Melmar Drive, pleaded guilty Aug. 18 to assault and leaving the scene of an accident in the Sept. 6, 2002, crash that left Jamie Walker with life-threatening injuries. Prosecutors sought to revoke Rogers' bond after she hit a mailbox in Prattville on Aug. 26 and then fled the scene. After waiting in hour for her to appear in court, during which time her attorney, Louis Colley, tried to locate her, Circuit Judge John Bush issued the bench warrant. Prosecutors say witnesses told state troopers that Rogers had been drinking the night of the 2002 accident, though she was not tested because it took a week to find her after the incident. They also feel alcohol was involved in the incident in which the mailbox was hit. "A condition of her bond was not to drink alcohol," said Chief Assistant District Attorney Sam Partridge. "A police officer investigating the mailbox incident found Miss Rogers at home and questioned her about it. At first she denied having anything to do with the incident but later admitted to the offense. The officer also noticed she smelled of alcohol. We feel that constituted a violation of bond." After her arrest following the Walker accident, Rogers spent nine months in the Tuscaloosa County Jail for violating probation on a previous conviction of driving under the influence, courthouse records show. When she is located, Rogers likely will remain in jail until her Oct. 8 sentencing, prosecutors said. Walker was riding a motorcycle at the time of the accident. He suffered severe brain damage and lost a leg because of the injuries. At the time of the accident, Walker was not wearing a helmet. Blood tests taken after the accident showed his blood alcohol content was 1.0, court records showed. A blood alcohol content of .80 is legally drunk in Alabama. Walker was in the courtroom Wednesday. "I just hope they find her soon. I don't want anyone else to face what happened to our family," said Kay Walker, Jaime Walker's mother. Rogers is a threat to the community, said District Attorney Randall Houston. "She hit a mailbox in August and left the scene," he said. "She needs
to be in jail because next time she might hit someone's 4-year-old child."
