Cumbie Sentenced In Lake Martin Boating Deaths

WETUMPKA ­ A Montgomery man will spend a year in jail for his role in an August 2008 fatal boating accident on Lake Martin.

Circuit Judge Ben Fuller sentenced Patrick L Cumbie, 22, to a 24-month sentence Monday morning. The sentence will be split, with Cumbie to serve 12 months, likely in the Emore County Jail, said District Attorney Randall Houston. After the year, Cumbie will be released and will serve three years' probation and could be returned to prison to serve the remaining 12 months if he violates the probation.

The victims' family agreed to the sentence.

Cumbie was driving at night when he struck a pontoon boat carrying a large group of of people from Prattville.

Donnie Tatum died the night of the accident. Sue Tatum, his sister-in-law- received serious injuries and died several months later in a Birmingham hospital, having never regained consciousness. Three other people were injured and have since recovered.

Cumbie pleaded guilty in October 2009 to homicide by vessel, one felony assault and three misdemeanor assault charges in the case, Elmore County Courthouse records show.
