A Tallassee 17-year-old will be tried as adult for arson and theft in the November 2009 fire that destroyed the historic Hotel Talisi.

Dylan Keith Carroll will face 13 felonies and two misdemeanors, after Circuit Judge Maura Culberson announced Friday that he could face trial as an adult for the Nov. 30 blaze.

District Attorney Randall Houston of the 19th Judicial Circuit announced the status of the alleged arsonist Friday.

Carroll will turn 18 in July. He will be charged with two counts of second-degree arson, third-degree arson, four counts of third-degree burglary, two counts of third-degree theft of property, two counts of first-degree criminal mischief, second-degree criminal mischief, breaking and entering a vehicle and possession of burglary tools.

He is believed to have started the fire to cover up a burglary at Smarty Pants Consignment Shop next door to the hotel. The charges stem not only from the Nov. 30 events, but to other criminal acts in the days before, Houston said, but he could not be more specific until he saw the warrants sworn out by Tallassee police.

Friday afternoon, officers were getting new warrants and Carroll was to be rearrested and charged as an adult.

The case will be presented during the next session of the Elmore County Grand Jury beginning April 5.

Houston said petitions from a "large number of Tallassee residents," and testimony from victims and investigators, were presented to Judge Culberson during a two-part hearing.

Carroll was not a student of Tallassee City Schools, according to a spokesperson.
